Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Malcolm Reed and I am a new arrival here. I do hope that we will be able to get along. It would be quite a shame otherwise.

[There is a short pause as he seems like he's considering something.]

Not to be a bother, but does anyone have some advice about here that may be helpful to me? If not, I'm sure I can figure things out on my own.

It will be vaguely traumatizing and you will curse the Admiral and nothing will happen and then you'll move on three days later to whining about something else.

[It will be a sad day when Kirk finds out this is the mirrorverse version of one of his heroes.]

Well, I'm not exactly one to whine about when something goes wrong, but if that's the general attitude about these sort of things, it's starting to give me an idea of what sort of place this is.

[Oh hey, that name is kinda familiar from his checking out the Defiant's database, but he'll instead react to his rank, going from the somewhat casual tone he's been using to a far more stiffly formal one.]

Sir. I didn't know you were a captain.

[Oh god Malcolm is sir-ing him. Best day ever.]

I don't know why you would. You can call me Jim, it's fine.

[He will call you sir forever. It's just what he does.]

I'm afraid I can't do that, sir. It wouldn't be right to speak to you so casually.

Given that I'm from about a hundred years into your future, I think it'll be okay.

A hundred years in the future or not, you're still a captain and still a superior, sir. It goes against everything I was trained to do.

I promise it doesn't bother me.

That's not the point. You're a captain and you outrank me. Speaking so casually to a superior officer just isn't proper.
